What is a brittle landscape?
|
If we don’t live sustainably, it means that sooner or later we will run out of all the basic resources that sustain human life. The choice is simple really: we either shop ‘til we drop or we start creating a way of life that will sustain our children and our children’s children far into the future. The programmes at Semilla Besada are all about creating a sustainable future. They are about turning us into sustainable stewards of this beautiful planet we live on. So how do we become sustainable stewards? Additional insightsWhat makes a sustainable steward differs from landscape to landscape. It is important for us to understand that what works in one context, will not necessary work in another. Landscape indicators such as the Savory Brittleness Scale and other insights are simple understandings that we cannot afford to be without. The implications of landscape brittleness are pivotal to creating sustainable outcomes, wherever we live or work.Profound implicationsMost of the world’s landmass is classed as brittle and this has profound implications for sustainable stewardship. Brittle landscapes are particularly vulnerable to desertification, through inappropriate management. For example, leaving things to nature, set-aside or rest can all have disastrous consequences in such landscapes. Ignorance of the way in which these landscapes respond, is resulting in a desertification rate which means that there will be no more land on which to grow food in less than two generations! It’s time to raise the bar in our response to the current environmental crisis.Raising the barWith recognition of the seriousness of the environmental crisis, everyone is being required to ‘raise the bar’ in their lives and livelihoods. Those working in sustainable stewardship are at the leading edge in creating resource efficient and sustainable lives, landscapes and livelihoods. However, we need to move beyond symptomatic approaches. We need to look at the interaction of complex relationships that make up our world. For the first time in mainland Europe, a powerful combination of holistic approaches to sustainable stewardship is being offered.A powerful combinationBeing a sustainable steward involves every decision we make, and
every design we create. Whether we simply want to live more
sustainably, or design a sustainable landscape, or generate a more
sustainable livelihood, the following courses provide the skills to
do just that:
