This place is really cool. I would love it if I could stay another week. You've got really cool games, like 'Civilisation'. The puppies are really great with their nice soft coats. Thank you for the chicken book. There were heaps of varieties. The chicken I liked best was the Barnevelder.

Thank you for everything. You have been so kind (and patient!) with us all. It has been really wonderful to experience such a different pace of life for a while in such a breathtakingly beautiful place. I still can't believe the views are real!

Angel Trowell, Alicia and Sofie, UK

It has been like a fairy tale, close your eyes in London ... and find yourself in the mountains surrounded by such beauty ... Such lovely simple food and all the love and care that you put into your garden and house and The Lodge.
Thank you ... and I've learnt something about water!

Katya, UK

Many thanks for your wonderful hospitality. Keep looking after this wonderful location.

Andy King, UK

Great place, guys. You could live here a 100 years and still not understand it all. Still it’s great to try!

Reg Curtis, UK

Thank you all for the opportunity to be here and be able to breathe out and enjoy the sky and the mountains.

Rick Pike, UK

Undoubtedly this has been the right place at the right time - space and time for reflection in this special place, balanced with a happy, relaxed family atmosphere. The talks and the books have truly added to the wholeness of the experience.

Annette Fernyhough, UK

Felicity Kendall and Richard Briers are nothing compared to you! it's really 'The Good Life' up here.
Great to see you again and thanks for making us feel so welcome and at home.

Bless you Aspen, David and Sam for all your care. It's been so good to meet you all and animals and the Magnificent Mountain.
Much love

Susan, UK

Diolch, thank you.
12 days in Spain have done the trick - the break, rest and complete change - they will send me home refreshed. Semilla Besada has been an oasis on a mountain top in sharp contrast to the energies of Madrid, Salobreña and Granada.
Eto, diolch yn faur.

Awel, Wales

Dear David, Aspen and Samuel, Thank you for receiving us all so warmly. You have made a lovely home here and we are moved and inspired by your endeavours.
Hasta la proxima

Accommodation

The Lodge is a comfortable apartment on the first floor of the family farmhouse and provides the perfect base for those who enjoy the flexibility of self-guided mountain walking.

Located at the same height as Ben Nevis, it gives you a head-start in exploring the higher mountain regions, direct from your back door.

View of house
View of entrance to the Lodge

The Lodge has its own entrance, giving you complete privacy and freedom to come and go as you please. The wild grape vine provides shade during the hottest summers and creates a pleasant space in which to sit during the afternoon heat.

The apartment has two twin-bedded rooms. One is located on the south side of the apartment and has views over Semilla Besada and the Contraviesa mountain range. It has a wood-burning stove to warm the room in winter. The other is located to the north and has views over the mountains to the Mediterrean Sea in the distance.
Bed linen and bath towels are provided, but please bring your own beach towels.

The living room has a kitchenette with a gas two-ring hob, sink and fridge, together with a wide-range of cooking utensils and crockery. There is also a dining table with chairs, and comfortable armchairs in which to relax during your holiday.

During winter the living room can be heated by a wood-burning stove. Wood is provided from sustainable local sources.

The adjoining balcony faces south and offers breathtaking views of the De Gador, Contraviesa and De Almijara mountains. The coastal towns of Salobreña and Motril can also be seen in the distance. On a clear day you can even see the Atlas mountains in Morocco. With a table and four garden chairs, it offers both sun and shade during the day and provides a beautiful setting for relaxing or enjoying a meal out of doors.

View of natural spring water pool at The Lodge

Guests are welcome to use the natural spring water pool. Please be aware that no chemicals are used to maintain water clarity, as the water is also used for irrigation and chemicals damage soil microbiology.

In order to conserve water resources the separate bathroom is fitted with a mini-bath with shower and a regulated flushing toilet. If you wish to mitigate your water usage even further there are composting toilets available at Semilla Besada. There is also a wash-basin with adjacent shaver point. Guests are provided with bio-degradable body-care products in order to protect soil microbiology, as all the water is re-used to irrigate the plants.

View of toys and games at The Lodge

A good collection of books and guides are available for you to read. There are also toys and games for children, with additional board games for adults in case ‘rain stops play’.

In order to further conserve non-renewable energy sources, power and water heating are obtained from solar systems and a wind turbine. These provide for the lighting and hot water needs of The Lodge. Although this precludes the use of an iron or hairdryer, mobile phones can be charged if you bring the appropriate 240v ac adaptor.

Granada, the ancient capital of Andalucia, is only an hour's drive away and offers an opportunity to visit the Alhambra, where the Moorish rulers of Andalucia created a summer palace, surrounded by trees and flowers and cooled by fountains and waterways.

The name Granada means pomegranate and captures the feeling that the Moors had for this special city.

For information about the Alhambra see http://www.alhambra.org

It is advisable to pre-book your tickets and this can be achieved in one of the following ways:

You can walk around the ancient Moorish quarters, the albaicín, followed by an evening of flamenco and great tapas in the local bars, or spend a morning luxuriating in the local arab-style baths.

You can also visit the picturesque white mountain villages of Pampañiera, Bubión and Capileira, where you can buy South American, Moroccan and local souvenirs.

The nearest beach is at Salobreña to the south and to the north, the Sierra Nevada ski resort is open to visitors from December to April.

If you wish to explore the area on horseback, The Caballo Blanco Trekking centre is only 10 mins away.

More details can be found on their website

On display in The Lodge there are a selection of home produced goods which make ideal gifts for those back home.

Road to the Lodge

The journey to The Lodge from Lanjarón takes approximately 25 minutes. The first third is concreted and therafter the dirt road winds its way up the mountain from 659m to 1300m in over 100 bends, providing increasingly stunning views over the mountains as you climb. For those not used to driving on dirt roads, the track would be considered adventurous! However locals come up and down regularly in their cars, one in his VW Beetle! The trick is to take the whole process slowly and not to arrive in the dark for the first journey.
